Active For Life - Spring 2012
March 5 - May 11

Download the flyer

All faculty and staff are invited to participate in the Active for Life program, a team-based, 10-week program that encourages you more physically active and eat healthier.

Developed and supported by the American Cancer Society, Active for Life uses teams and an online point system to provide the social support and tracking that lead to successful lifestyle changes. Team captains provide encouragement and communications about weekly activities -- and teams are rewarded as members make progress toward their goals. It's easy, builds team spirit and helps you reach your personal wellness goals.

You set goals based on your current activity level and how you want to commit to being active for the next 10 weeks. All types of physical activity count – whether its yard work, brisk walking, running or a group exercise class.  You earn additional bonus points for participation in the fun weekly challenges and scheduled activities.

Active for Life participants will need to form a small team of co-workers, friends, or colleagues or join a team as a Free Agent. Once you've formed a team, pick one person to be your Team Captain, who will help provide support and lead your team to victory in reaching your goals! Teams are rewarded as members make progress towards their goals.

How to Participate:

Step 1: Form a Team (5 to 15 team members)

If you know other people besides yourself who would like to participate in Active for Life, form a team! Your team can be made up of any of the following or combination:

  • Co-workers in your department
  • Colleagues in your building
  • Colleagues and/or friends throughout campus

The minimum number of team members should be 5, with a maximum number of 15 team members (including your Team Captain). If you have more than 15 people, consider breaking up into two (or more) teams. You can all still work together as a one big team, but with an added layer of fun, friendly competition in between.

Step 2: Choose Your Team Captain

After forming a team, the next step is to decide a Team Name and who will be your Team Captain.

Being a Team  Captain is easy and a lot of fun! Team Captains act as leaders for their team and help motivate team members to achieve their goals, as individuals and together as a team. You don’t have to be the most physically active person; it’s more important that you have the skills to champion for your team and lead them to success!

Team Captain responsibilities include:

  • Assist in helping team members set realistic, but still challenging, goals.
  • Provide motivation and encouragement.
  • Inform team members about important announcements, dates, deadlines, and Active for Life events.
  • Encourage participation in Active for Life program and team events.
