| Who May Enroll |
Students automatically are enrolled in the University's Student Health Insurance
Plan (SHIP), and charged a health insurance fee on their registration bill. (See
Why SHIP) Groups eligible for SHIP
include: - All registered undergraduate and graduate students of
the Berkeley campus at the University of California, including registered international
students
- All registered undergraduate and graduate students of Mills College,
including registered international students
- All non-registered "Filing
Fee Status" students of the Berkeley campus who are completing work under the
auspices of the University of California, but are not attending classes, as well
as some withdrawn students
- All non-registered UC Berkeley Concurrent Enrollment
students who are completing degree requirements by taking courses through UC Berkeley
Extension

| How to Enroll | Registered
students automatically are enrolled in SHIP. The fee for SHIP is billed as part
of students' registration fees. Students on Filing Fee or
Withdrawal status are not automatically enrolled in SHIP, and must apply for the
plan. For more information and to apply, see SHIP for
Filing Fee and Withdrawal Students. Note: Students can waive
enrollment with proof of comparable insurance and receive a refund of the
SHIP fee. Waivers must be filed prior to each fall semester. |
| Pre-existing conditions | SHIP
covers pre-existing conditions if you were enrolled in another health insurance
plan for the six months prior to your enrollment in SHIP. If you were uninsured
prior to enrolling in SHIP, you may have a waiting period of six months prior
to SHIP covering preexisting conditions. Pregnancy is not subject to the preexisting
condition waiting period. |
