About Physical Therapy
University Health Services provides affordable outpatient orthopedic
physical therapy services to students. Faculty and staff members also
are served if they have a work-related injury.
Located on the 3rd Floor of Tang Center, the Physical Therapy unit
includes six treatment rooms outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment,
as well as a spacious rehabilitation gym. Exercise equipment in the
gym includes an upper-body ergometer, a treadmill, exercise bicycles,
a pulley system, free weights, and a slide board. Other equipment, such
as gymnastic balls and foam rollers, are available for stabilization
activities. Traditional physical therapy modalities, including ultrasound,
electrical stimulation and iontophoresis, are available.
Physical therapists provide comprehensive evaluation and individualized
treatment programs on referral from UHS or outside clinicians. Our staff
has expertise in a variety of specialty areas, including sports medicine,
ergonomics, Feldenkrais training, hand therapy, and orthotics. Treatment
in the Physical Therapy unit at Tang is limited to 6 to 12 visits, depending
on your diagnosis. If further treatment is necessary, referrals to outside
physical therapy providers will be offered.
We recommend that you bring clothing such as shorts, sports bras/tank
tops, and/or exercise attire to your appointment. This will allow the
injured area of your body to be adequately exposed for optimal evaluation
and treatment.
Our treatment philosophy stresses active patient participation through
patient education and home exercise. This is of paramount importance
for the success of your rehabilitation program. You will be asked, therefore,
to do some activities on your own to optimize your rehabilitation. These
could include exercise, stretches, ergonomic modifications, and the
application of ice or heat. As therapeutic exercise is often a component
of physical therapy, please be prepared to actively participate in your
treatment. Gym time is available during the hours of 8 am to noon and
1 pm to 4 pm, at a nominal fee, for those patients who wish to utilize
our equipment.
For further questions, please feel free to contact us at (510) 642-0607.
