Supervisor Tips: Personal Safety

Fact Sheet "Personal Safety" (pdf)
Print and share this fact sheet with office staff.

Assess Your Office:

  • Has any staff expressed personal safety concerns?
  • Does any staff work alone in your office during the evenings or on weekends?
  • Does your office or building have a personal safety and security plan? Are staff members familiar with it?
  • Have there been any thefts or other crimes in your office or building in the last year?

Suggestions for Action:

  • Distribute "Personal Safety" with staff.
  • Familiarize yourself with your building's safety and security plans and share them with staff. Contact your Building Coordinator or the UC Police Crime Prevention Unit for help in assessing your office for safety, if needed.
  • Invite a Police Officer from the Crime Prevention Unit to make a presentation on campus safety, personal safety, and property protection at a staff meeting. Encourage staff members to share their concerns and questions about personal safety at work.
  • Involve staff in personal safety planning: how to handle suspicious or difficult people, assessing their office space for personal security, taking collective responsibility for keeping doors locked and looking out for each other. Encourage staff input and follow through on suggested solutions when appropriate.
  • Clarify night or weekend safety guidelines, if applicable, for your office.
  • Promote crime awareness and self-defense skills among staff by sharing information about self-defense classes offered on campus or organize a class for your office.
  • Make sure that emergency phone numbers are easily accessible at all phones in your office.
  • Document training sessions and safety improvements you have undertaken. Keep your department's safety committee, injury and illness prevention plan coordinator, or Building Coordinator updated on your activities.
