Health*Matters Spring Programs 2009

Step Up to Fitness Pedometer Program
4th Tuesday of every month, Jan. 27 or Feb. 24 or Mar. 24 or Apr. 28 or May 26 or Jun. 23, 12:10-1 pm, Tang Ed Center

Find out how you can fit fitness into your day by walking 10,000 steps wearing a pedometer. Receive an exercise band and learn a strength and stretching routine to round out your fitness program. Accusplit AE2720STEP pedometers for sale, $7 (tax included). Enroll at UCB Learning Center.

Know Your Numbers Health Screening ($10 fee)
Wednesday, Jan. 28 or Feb. 4, or Friday, Jan. 30 or Feb. 6, 7:30-10 am, Tang Ed Center

Know Your Numbers is a fasting health screening for total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, glucose, blood pressure, and optional body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and body fat. Receive your confidential results immediately and attend Leading a Healthy Lifestyle (optional workshop) to gain a better understanding of your results and resources.

  • Schedule your appointment at UCB Learning Center.
  • Fast 12 hours prior to the screening.
  • Bring $10 cash or check made out to UC Regents.
  • Attend Leading a Healthy Lifestyle to gain a better understanding of your results and resources available to you.

**Please note: The Staywell and Kaiser Health Assessment (HA) tools can provide you with a more complete health profile when you are able to provide your numbers received through this screening.

  • Staywell: complete the HA Jan 5 - April 15, 2009 for a $100 gift card (choice of 350 merchants)
  • Kaiser: complete the HA by April 15 to be entered into the prize drawing for $500 and iPods

Restorative Yoga Introduction
Monday, Feb. 2 or Apr. 6 or June 1, 12:10-1 pm, Tang Ed Center

In this introductory class, participants will learn how Restorative Yoga encourages a state of deep relaxation using props and simple poses that can be done anywhere. Bring a yoga mat and/or blanket or beach towel. Enroll at UCB Learning Center.

Leading a Healthy Lifestyle workshop
Tuesday, Feb. 10, or Wednesday, Feb. 18, 12:10-1 pm, Tang Ed Center

Gain a better understanding of specific diet and exercise habits to reduce your health risks and the resources available to you. This workshop is a good first step following Know Your Numbers health screening or completion of your Staywell or Kaiser Health Assessment (HA). UCB Learning Center.

Healthy Habits Lifestyle Incentive Program
Feb. 23-May 15

Over 12-weeks, Healthy Habits can help you successfully improve your eating and physical activity habits. Each week, participants choose a simple goal, track progress, receive weekly wellness bulletins, and earn rewards along the way.

Eat Smart Get Fit ($30 fee)
Session A: Wednesdays (class), Feb.25- Apr. 1, 12:10-1 pm, Tang Ed Center; Mondays (workout), Mar. 2-Apr.6, 12:10-1:30 pm, Edwards Track; or
Session B: Wednesdays (class), Apr. 8-May. 13, 12:10-1 pm, Tang Ed Center; Mondays (workout), Apr.13-May 18, 12:10-1:30 pm, Edwards Track

This 6-week action-based program jumpstarts you into a healthy lifestyle. Includes fitness and nutrition assessments, weekly group workout with a personal trainer, class sessions with the registered dietitian and an Accusplit pedometer. Participants are expected to complete the online nutrition program and are encouraged to walk three times a week. Enroll at UCB Learning Center.

Healthy & Quick Meals
Wednesday, Mar. 11, or Thursday, Jun. 4, 12:10-1 pm, Tang Ed Center

Get tools for meal planning and fresh ideas for delicious meals that are healthy and quick to prepare for a busy lifestyle. UCB Learning Center.

Adult CPR with AED ($45 for RSF members, $60 for non-members)
Friday, Apr 17, 8 am-noon, RSF Conference Room

Learn life-saving CPR and receive certification from the American Red Cross. Enroll online at http://calbears.berkeley.edu and go to the Fitness section. Enrollment is limited. Co-sponsored with Recreational Sports

Health*Matters Walking Group
Check the website for the calendar of special walks this Spring. The Walking Group meets every MWF, 12:10 pm, at the Campanile. Fit 30-40 minutes of walking into your work day for the benefits of social support, stress relief, and renewed energy. No enrollment required.
