UCB FOOD DAY CALENDAR OF EVENTS

For Food Day 2011, Eat Real, Eat Whole Grains is the theme being promoted by University Health Services and Cal Dining and some of the campus events and activities support this message.

Food Day BYO Lunch Picnic
Noon - 1:30 pm, Campanile Lawn (between the Campanile and South Hall) with Lilia Smelkova, Food Day Campaign Manager, CSPI, Michele Simon, public health lawyer and food activist, and Cal Golden Overtones.

EVENT DESCRIPTIONS

Events on Food Day- Monday, October 24th
BYO Lunch Picnic, 12:10-1:00pm, Campanile Lawn Area
Bring your own sustainable, healthy lunch to the picnic for a convivial gathering of students, staff, and faculty in celebration of Food Day. All people and lunches welcome!

The Picnic Program :
  • Lilia Smelkova, Food Day Campaign Manager, CSPI, will kick-off the Food Day picnic program (around 12:30 pm).
  • Michele Simon, public health lawyer and food activist, will provide a welcome address to picnic participants.
  • Cal Golden Overtones will follow the welcome with a musical performance.

    Tabling at the Picnic:
  • Recycled Notebook Making and Give-Away- Sponsored by One-Side Clean Paper Initiative
    Using old cardboard food boxes and one-side clean paper, make your own recycled notebook and walk away looking at food packaging differently.
  • Processed vs. Produce Hi-Low Game and Farm Bill Tabling- Sponsored by UCB CalPIRG
    Check your skills at guessing prices of processed foods vs. produce and have your photo taken as a twinkie or carrot "battling it out" for a Farm Bill photopetition.
  • Fair Trade Information Table- Sponsored by Fair Trade University
    Obtain information about why fair trade food is important and places to buy fair trade food close to campus.
  • Compost and Packaging Educational Table- Sponsored by STeam's Compost Group and Students Team on Zero Waste and Plastics (STOP)
    Learn more about composting and food packaging including real-life examples of the compost process.
  • WalkGreen with the Health*Matters Walking Group, 12:10-1:00pm
    Meet at the Campanile and take a green stroll to The Local on Sproul Plaza for delicious fresh, local produce and a whole grain sample from Cheeseboard, stop over at the Berkeley Student Food Collective, and then back to the Campanile for the BYO picnic.
  • No registration required.
  • The Local Produce Stand, 11-2pm, Sproul Plaza
    Stop by this weekly local produce stand before heading to the picnic for your fruit and veggie fix as well as a whole grain “Ufta” bread sample from the Cheeseboard in honor of Food Day.
  • Cal Dining Mini Sustainable Food and Vendor Showcase, 5:00-8:00 pm, Crossroads Dining Hall
    Cal Dining will be showcasing their sustainable foods and the vendors they work with to bring Cal students organic, humane, and sustainable choices. More info to come.
  • Edible Occupation 101: Careers in Sustainable Food and Agriculture
    159 Mulford, 7:00 pm
    Panel and mixer featuring guest speakers from a wide range of careers in the sustainable food and agriculture sector, from farming to cooking to distribution to policy. Guests will include Esperanza Pallana of the East Bay Urban Agriculture Alliance and Pluck and Feather Farm, Haleh Zandi from Planting Justice, Nathan McClintock, recent UCB PhD in Geography with research in Urban Farming, Karen Rogers from Sprouts Cooking Club, and Melisa Lin from Veritable Vegetable. Snacks provided by the Berkeley Student Food Collective!

  • Mindfulness and Food (for Faculty and Staff)
    Friday, Oct. 21, 12:10-1:30 pm, Tang Ed Center
    Food and eating make up a large part of our daily lives, governed by social, emotional and spiritual influences. For some, it’s used to relieve stress and avoid difficult feelings. This class applies mindful practices to this important part of our lives.Ronna Kabatznick, Ph.D.

  • Cooking with Great Grains (for Faculty and Staff)
    Thursday, Oct. 27, 12:10-1 pm, Tang Ed Center
    Curious about quinoa? Wonder how to turn barley into a family favorite? This class takes the intimidation out of cooking whole grains, including some of the more unusual whole grains. Recipes, demonstration, and samples provided.
