Berkeley Builds Capacity (BBC)
Welcome, we’re Berkeley Builds Capacity! We are working to reduce HIV and the negative consequences associated with related substance abuse through free and rapid HIV testing and counseling in addition to many other services. We’re a five year collaboration between the Berkeley Free Clinic and University Health Services at UC Berkeley funded by SAMHSA.

We recognize that historically marginalized communities, in particular men who have sex with men, queer, questioning, two-spirit, same-gender loving, downE, gay and bi men of color are disproportionately affected by HIV. We respond to these disparities among 18-24 year-olds in our East Bay communities by:
- Enabling easier access to knowing one’s HIV status through increased access to testing.
- Providing consistent, safe, non-judgmental, client-centered HIV testing.
- Creating accessible educational materials and programming to build our communities’ skills in discussing sexual health, healthy relationships and harm reduction practices.
- Creating a network of providers who collaborate to solve problems and improve services for our communities of focus.
- Leading and collaborating in capacity-building projects that have a positive impact on our East Bay communities.
Additionally, we are:
- Developing a model for identifying higher risk HIV- clients and working with them to reduce their risk within a large university urgent care setting.
- Developing a model for comprehensive wraparound care for HIV+ students in a large university general health services setting.
