University Health Services (UHS) provides comprehensive medical, mental health and health promotion services to all Cal students and a variety of occupational health services to faculty and staff. UHS also provides services to students of Mills College in Oakland, UC staff who choose UHS as their Health Net provider, and to staff at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Berkeley campus visiting scholars and spouses/domestic partners of Berkeley students may also use UHS on a fee-for-service basis. Note that a limited number of other categories of UCB and UC students, families and staff also are eligible to use all or some UHS services for varying time periods. The appointment office at (510) 642-2000 will help you verify eligibility. Spouses, domestic partners and other eligible non-student groups pay fees-for-service, which are higher than student fees. Services are designed to minimize the impact of illness, emotional distress and injury on studies and work. Coupled with health promotion and public health programs, UHS reaches all segments of the Berkeley campus community.

Students can use the medical services just as they would their regular doctor's office and urgent care center. The facility is fully accredited, staffed by board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, a nutritionist,and nurses.

A comprehensive counseling center, staffed by psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists, offers individual and group counseling, and includes a complete career counseling center. The health promotion unit offers programs and services for keeping students healthy and safe, including many opportunities for students to get involved in shaping the public health of the campus.

UHS provides for faculty and staff:

• An occupational health clinic and program, including the campus ergonomics program
• CARE Services counseling and referral program
• Health*Matters wellness program
• Workers' Compensation and Vocational Rehabilitation
• Serves as the Health Net provider for the campus.
  

Outside of Health Net, medical care is limited to staff and faculty members who have been injured or become ill on the job. Please see Faculty/Staff Services A-Z for information on individual programs, and how to use or participate in them.

UHS employs over 300 people, including physicians, psychiatrists, consulting medical specialists, nurse practitioners (nurses with advanced training), registered nurses, pharmacists, health educators, PhD psychologists, social workers, and other health professionals.

In addition to paid staff, approximately 400 Cal students participate in UHS peer, intern, and volunteer programs. Over 50 community volunteers donate over 7,000 hours a year.
