Counseling Programs at Tang

The Tang Center provides a wide range of counseling programs to help students with personal, academic, career, health-related issues and crisis concerns.

    Cancel Appointments
    Call 642-9494 (CPS or Psychiatry) or 642-6074 (Social Services) 24 hours a day, to cancel an appointment. You must cancel at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a Late Cancellation Fee.

    Location: 3300 Tang Center
    Crisis/emergency

    If you are in crisis and need urgent care, come to CPS at 3300 Tang and inform the receptionist. You will be seen by the next available counselor. When Tang is closed, see Emergency and Crisis or call After Hours Assistance at 643-7197 for referrals.

    Upon request, the Counseling staff also provides workshops for student groups, academic departments and administrative units on a variety of psychological issues, as well as how to refer students for counseling. Call 642-9494 to make a request.

    Career Counseling LibraryAs part of a comprehensive career counseling program at Tang, the Career Counseling Library has an extensive collection of materials for academic and career exploration. The Library website has many career exploration links.
    Helping you help a student

    We provide consultation to faculty and staff who are concerned about students. Call the Outreach Coordinator at 643-2906. If you believe there is imminent danger, immediately call the police. See these resources for assistance:

    Crisis, campusCounselors can help with post-trauma debriefing and counseling when departments or groups have experienced a crisis involving students. Call CPS at 642-9494.

    Preferences for a counselor

    If you prefer to talk with a counselor of a particular sex, ethnicity or sexual identity we will do our best to arrange it. Simply inform the assistant when you make your appointment or include this information on the CPS information form.

    EligibilityAll registered Berkeley students are eligible to use these services. You do not have to purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). See Attention Mills College and UC Extension Students.

    Attention Mills College and UC Extension Students

    • Mills College students are not eligible for counseling at UHS. For counseling services, you need to schedule an appointment at the Mills College Counseling Center (510) 430- 2119. Note: Mills College students are referred to psychiatrists by the Mills College counseling staff.

    • UC Extension Students are not eligible for counseling services at UHS, except for students in the Special Freshman Program. These students have been accepted as transfer students to UCB for Spring semester and are extension students during the fall only. These students are eligible for both counseling and psychiatry appointments.
