Enrollment, Fees and Membership

Who May Enroll All registered undergraduate and graduate students of the Berkeley campus at the University of California, including registered international students are automatically enrolled in the Berkeley's Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), and charged a health insurance fee on their registration bill. (See Why SHIP)

Groups eligible for Voluntary SHIP include:

Non-registered graduate students of the University of California Berkeley campus on Filing Fee, and undergraduate students on Concurrent Enrollment status (see definition below), may purchase plan coverage for a maximum of one semester while on either status. The student must have been covered by the plan in the term immediately preceding the term for which the student wants to purchase coverage.

Filing Fee (Graduate students only):
Graduate students must apply to their academic departments for official Filing Fee status. Filing Fee status is in lieu of registration to either file a dissertation or thesis, or to take a comprehensive exam, Filing Fee students are not allowed to take courses while on Filing Fee.  Filing Fee can only be used once. To complete the Voluntary SHIP enrollment process, a student must submit a letter from his or her academic department confirming the student’s approved Filing Fee Status to the Student Health Insurance Office.

Concurrent Enrollment Status (Undergraduate students only):
Undergraduate students in their final semester of study who are completing degree requirements through UC Berkeley Extension's Concurrent Enrollment Program are considered to be on Concurrent Enrollment Status. To complete the SHIP enrollment process while on Concurrent Enrollment Status, a student must submit a letter of approval from his or her academic department and proof of payment for the class(es) at UC Berkeley Extension to the Student Health Insurance Office.

Filing fee (grad) and concurrent enrollment (undergrad) students are not automatically enrolled; see below.

How to Enroll Registered students are automatically enrolled in SHIP. The fee for SHIP is billed as part of students' registration fees. Dependent students who do not waive will have their Cost of Attendance and Financial Aid adjusted to accommodate this expense by the fourth week of instruction.
Note: Students can waive enrollment with proof of comparable insurance. If the fees are paid and then a student waives, the fees may be refunded back to the original payer/payment source. Waivers must be filed prior to each fall semester. Dependent students who waive SHIP coverage will not receive Financial Aid for this cost.

Students on Filing Fee and Concurrent Enrollment are not automatically enrolled in Voluntary SHIP, and must enroll for the plan. For more information and to enroll, visit Enrollment period for SHIP Voluntary Plan: Fall semester enrollment period is July 15-September 15 with an effective coverage date of August 15 and Spring semester enrollment period is December 15-February 15 with an effective coverage date of January 15.
