Lynne Alper, MD
Dr. Lynne S. Alper joined UHS in 1994 and serves as a Primary Care
Physician, working both in Urgent Care Clinic and in Primary Care
Clinic. She is board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Alper
received her medical degree ('89) from the University of Southern
California and her bachelor's degree ('85) from Tufts University. She
completed her residency in Internal Medicine ('92) at Cedars Sinai
Medical Center.
In addition to her interest in college health, she has special
clinical interests in internal medicine (including asthma, pulmonary
conditions, migraine, diabetes, rheumatologic and autoimmune
conditions, anxiety and depression), travel medicine (pre- and
post-travel consultation), and eating disorders. She is also a member
of the Eating Disorders Treatment Team at UHS.

Anita Backer, RN
Anita Backer joined UHS in 1997 and serves as a Registered Nurse in
Urgent Care, UHS advice line and travel clinic. She received her
Bachelor’s in Education at St. Mary’s College and then
went on to Samuel Merritt University to become a registered
nurse.
She is certified in Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support and is
a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant. She serves on the professional
Nurse group for International Society of Travel Medicine and also
works at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center as a Nurse Educator. |

Howard Backer, MD
Dr. Howard Backer joined UHS in 2000 as a clinician in Urgent Care. He attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco ('75), followed by an internship at Highland, Alameda County Hospital, and an Emergency Medicine fellowship and residency at San Francisco General Hospital. Many years later, he returned to UCSF for a residency in Preventive Medicine, including an MPH at UC Berkeley ('99). Before transitioning to public health, Dr Backer worked with The Permanente Medical Group in Hayward. He joined the California Department of Health Services in 2000, after practicing emergency medicine for 25 years in a variety of settings, including urban county hospitals, small resort communities, and community hospitals.

Casey Batten, MD
Dr. Casey Batten joined UHS in 2006 and serves as head team
physician. Prior to Cal, Casey was an Assistant Clinical Professor of
Orthopedics at the University of California San Francisco. He
also has provided medical coverage for NCAA championship events
including men’s and women’s basketball, track and field,
and FCS football. In addition to his responsibilities with the
student athletes at Cal, Dr. Batten continues as an invited speaker
on various sports medicine topics on a local and national level, and
also serves as a peer reviewer for two respected sports medicine
publications. He has published on topics such as concussion,
and physical activity factors in adolescent athletes. As a
member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM),
Dr. Batten is active in committee work dedicated to expanding the
quality and availability of sports medicine training for medical
students and resident physicians. Batten is also responsible
for clinical and academic instruction for the UC Davis-UC Berkeley
Sports Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Batten holds a bachelor’s
degree in Kinesiology-Exercise Science from the University of
Wisconsin. After attending medical school at the Medical
College of Wisconsin, he completed a residency in Family Medicine at
the University of Tennessee College of Medicine-Chattanooga
Unit. Batten then earned a fellowship with the UC Davis -UC
Berkeley Sports Medicine Program. Born and raised in Madison
Wisconsin, Dr. Batten currently resides with his wife, Alison, in
Berkeley.

Katherine Bedeian joined UHS in 2000 and serves as a Nurse
Practitioner. She received her master's degree in Public Health

Josephine G. Billington, RN, NP, MPA
Jo Billington joined UHS in 1991, served as Clinical Services
Operations Director and was promoted to Clinical Services Director in
2008. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing ('73) from
University of California, San Francisco and her master's degree in
Public Administration ('85) at Cal State Hayward in Health
Administration. She no longer sees patients, but was a Pediatric and
Gynecological Nurse Practitioner ('74-'90).
Billington worked for almost 20 years at La Clinica de la Raza in
Oakland, CA, which serves low income families. She received the
Chancellor's Outstanding Staff Award ('04) and the Berkeley Staff
Assembly Certificate of Excellence in Management ('97) and

Brad Buchman, MD, MBA
Dr. Brad Buchman joined UHS in 2008 as Medical Director. He is
board certified in Family Medicine. Buchman received his medical
degree (’89) from the University of California San Diego
School of Medicine, his MBA (’98) from California State
University and his Associate Bachelor’s degree (’85)
from UC Berkeley. He completed his residency in Family Medicine
(’92) at UC San Diego Medical Center.
Buchman’s responsibilities include ensuring a high quality
of care, supervising clinical operations and the occupational
health program, and seeing patients in the Urgent Care, Primary
Care, and Sports Medicine units. His primary focus at UHS is in two
critical areas – quality of care and customer service. This
includes expanding accessibility of services to faculty, staff and
students; increasing visibility on campus; maintaining and building
relationships with key campus partners and stakeholders, and
continuing the community health model.

Pamela Cameron, MSN, FNP
Pamela Cameron serves as Associate Director of Public Health, Quality Improvement and Specialty Services. Pam joined UHS in 1987. She is certified as a Family Nurse
Practitioner. She is also certified as an Enterostomal Therapy
Nurse. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Skidmore
College and her master's degree in nursing from Samuel Merritt
College.

Cindy J. Chang, MD
Cindy J. Chang, MD, served as head team physician for Cal's 27 athletic teams from 1995 to 2008. In Jan 2008 she resigned as head team physician in order to prioritize her family and pursue other interests, including serving her local community. She continues to work at UC-Berkeley as a sports medicine specialist, and serves as a consultant and team physician for the Cal intercollegiate athletes.
Prior to coming to Cal, Chang was an assistant team physician for Ohio State and an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at OSU's College of Medicine. She is recognized as one of the leading primary care sports medicine physicians in the country. She has published articles and contributed to textbooks in sports medicine, and is a frequent presenter at national medical conferences. She was an elected four-year member of the Board of Directors for the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM), and has also served on the Medical Education Committee for the American College of Sports Medicine. She is the former president for AMSSM, which is one the largest organizations of primary care sports medicine physicians in the world.
In addition, Chang worked at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and was part of the USA medical team for the Winter Paralympic Games in Nagano, Japan, in 1998 and in Salt Lake City in 2002. She served as Chief Medical Officer for the USA delegation at the 2007 Parapan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, and the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing. Chang will be serving as USA’s Chief Medical Officer for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
As an assistant clinical professor at UC Davis and UC San Francisco, Chang remains actively involved in the education of medical students, residents and fellows. She was the 2003 recipient of the AMSSM Founders Award, given to a sports medicine physician who demonstrates outstanding professional achievement and service to the community.
After earning both her bachelor's ('84) and medical ('89) degrees from Ohio State, Chang completed her family practice residency at UCLA before returning to Ohio State for a fellowship in sports medicine. She and her husband, Chris Hudson (Cal '88), live in Berkeley with their daughter, Carlin, and son, Joseph.

Arleen Ervin-King, RN, NP, MSN
Arleen Ervin-King joined UHS in 2012 and serves as the Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner. She received her bachelor’s of science in nursing (’99) from Samuel Merritt/St. Mary’s College and her master’s of science in nursing (’04) from UCSF, School of Nursing.
Arleen comes to UHS with much experience in Occupational Health, having worked in the UCSF Occupational Health Clinic for five years, with the last two years focused on work-related musculoskeletal injuries. She also staffed the UCSF Needlestick Hotline, which provides continuity of care to UCSF personnel who have had possible blood-borne pathogen exposure through needle sticks or other injuries. |

Lee Marshall Fagen, RN, MSN, ANP
Lee Fagen serves as Urgent Care supervisor and has been with UHS
since 1998. He is board certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner
Certified Specialist by the American Nurses' Credential Center. He
received his associate degree in nursing from Mesa Community College
('83), his Bachelor's degree in nursing ('90) from University of San
Francisco and his Master's degree in nursing ('92) from the
University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing. In
addition to being a general practitioner with an interest in college
health, he has a special interest in sexual health education. Fagen

Anna Harte, MD
Dr. Anna Harte (née Bloxham) joined UHS in 2001, and now serves as Associate Medical Director with clinical duties in both Primary Care and Urgent Care Clinics. She is board certified in Internal Medicine. She has a B.A. in music from University of California, Santa Cruz ('92) and received her medical degree from Yale University ('98), followed by a residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco ('01). In addition to her interest in college health, she has special interests in tuberculosis, HIV, and other infectious diseases as well as international health and care of the underserved, and transgender care. Harte also works at the City of Berkeley Tuberculosis and Communicable Disease Program and is a clinical instructor at UCSF. She still loves music, which she shares with her husband Alexis and children Mia and Leo.

Dr. Elizabeth Hedelman joined UHS in 1995 and serves a Primary Care

bachelor's degree ('86) from University of California, Santa
Barbara. She completed her residency in Family Practice ('95) at
University of California, Davis. In addition to her interest in

disorders.
Hedelman is also a Healthnet Provider, an Asthma Protocol
Committee member, a Migraine Protocol Committee chair, and a member
of the Eating Disorder Treatment Team at UHS.

Annie Hope joined UHS in 2009 as a physician in Primary Care. She is a Board Certified Family Practice MD. Veronica joined UHS in 2012 as Associate Team Physician after serving as a volunteer team physician at Cal for the previous two years. Eleanore Kim, MD, FACOG
Dr. Eleanore Kim joined UHS in 2009 and serves as a gynecologist.
She received her Bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (’93) and then received her medical
degree from the University of Illinois (’98). She completed
her residency in 2002 in Obstetrics and gynecology at the
University of California, San Francisco.
She has a
special interested in women’s health, family planning and
contraception, cervical dysplasia and colposcopy. She was in a
private practice in Berkeley for 7 years as an
obstetrician/gynecologist and surgeon before coming to UHS. She is
also involved with the Women’s Health/Dysplasia and
Electronic Medical Records Committee at UHS. When Eleanore is not
working she enjoys leisure time and travel with her husband and
daughters Gabrielle and Millicent.

Odile Leland-Arizmendi, MD
Dr. Odile Leland-Arizmendi joined UHS in 2003 and serves as an
Urgent Care physician. She received her Bachelor’s of Art
from Harvard University and her MD from Columbia University.
She works in the Emergency Department for Kaiser, as well as at
the Chinese hospital in San Francisco. During her training, she was
lucky enough to spend some time within the French medical system in
Paris. Odile is fluent in English, French and
Spanish.

master's degree in nursing and Nurse Practitioner Certification

Diane Liu, MD, MPH
Dr. Diane Liu joined UHS in 1997 and serves as an Occupational
Medical and Public Health Specialist. She received her
Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Stanford University
(‘81), her doctorate from Oregon Health Science University
(‘85) and then went on to receive her Master in Public Health
from our own UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health
(’90).
In addition to her interest in public health she is also
interested in ergonomics, emergency and infectious disease
preparedness, zoonotic infection and toxicology. She received two
fellowships one in Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the
other in ATSDR Toxicology. She has contributed to publications such
as “Poisoning and Drug Overdose” and “Critical
Care Toxicology” and is currently contributing to the UCB
campus AED program.

Rosemary Mann, MD
Dr. Rosemary Mann joined UHS in 2008 and serves as an Urgent Care
physician. She received her Bachelor’s of Science from the

UC San Francisco.

emergency medicine in the E.R at Kaiser Hayward and Kaiser Walnut
Creek for 35 years before joining the staff at the Tang Center.

Dr. Harris Masket joined the University Health Services for his
post-graduate sports medicine training in 2003. In 2005 he became the
Chief Urgent Care Physician and an associate team physician at the
Tang Center. Dr. Masket graduated from Cal ('93) and George
Washington University Medical School ('99). He completed a primary
care-internal medicine residency at Alameda County Medical Center in
2002 and is board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Masket was a
sportscaster at Cal on KALX from '89-'91. Dr. Masket and his wife

Jeffrey D. Nelson, MD
Dr. Jeffrey Nelson serves both as a Primary Care Physician in the
Primary Care and Urgent Care Clinics and as an Associate Team

Sports Medicine. He received his medical degree ('90) at Dartmouth
Medical School and his bachelor's degree ('86) at University of
California, Berkeley. He then completed the Flight Surgery training
program ('92) with the US Navy in Pensacola, Florida. Nelson
completed his residency in Family Practice ('97) at University of
California, Davis and a Fellowship in Sports Medicine ('99) in the
University of California, Davis/University of California, Berkeley
combined program.
Nelson is a member of the American Medical Society of Sports

Adriana Schoenberg, RN, FNP
Adriana Schoenberg is a nurse practitioner that has been with UHS
since 1985. She is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
She received her bachelor's degree in nursing and her PHN ('76)
from Cal State University, Hayward. She then received her Family
Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Certification ('81) at
University of California, Davis. In addition to being a general
practitioner with an interest in college health, she has special
clinical interests in mental health, women's health, immigrant
health, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGTBQ) issues. She is one of three clinicians who insert IUDs and Implanon/Nextplanon.
Schoenberg serves as chair of the Eating Disorders Treatment
Team. She received the UHS Distinguished Service Award ('89, '94,
'96, '97, '99) and the University of California, Berkeley
Excellence in Management Award ('97).

Erica Schwilk, MD, MPH
Dr. Erika Schwilk joined UHS in 2011 as a physician in Occupational Health. She received her BA in Biology with environmental emphasis from Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA and her MD from Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Schwilk completed training in internal medicine at UC Davis where she worked as a hospitalist, then did fellowship training in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at UC San Francisco and obtained her MPH in Environmental Health from UC Berkeley.
Dr. Schwilk currently serves on the UC Berkeley School of Public Health Alumni Association Board of Directors, and, in addition to occupational health, has special clinical interest in public health, environmental health, toxicology, and infectious disease.

Bruce Wilbur, MD Bruce Wilbur joined UHS in 2012, and serves as a physician in both Primary and Urgent Care. He received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Humbolt State University (‘84), and his medical degree from UC Irvine (‘92). Dr. Wilbur comes to UHS with extensive experience with the college population. He spent the past year and a half working as an assistant professor and family physician at Touro University College of Medicine in Vallejo, and the ten years before that as a staff physician, and subsequently health care director, at CSU Stanislaus.
In addition to college health, Dr. Wilbur has a special clinical interest in fitness and nutrition, mental health, eating disorders, dermatology, health promotion and health education.

Robin Mills has been a health educator with UHS since 2008. She received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Mills College in 2001 and her masters degree in human sexuality studies from San Francisco State University in 2007. |
