Dr. Lynne S. Alper joined UHS in 1994 and serves as a Primary Care Physician, working both in Urgent Care Clinic and in Primary Care Clinic. She is board certified in Internal Medicine. Alper received her medical degree ('89) from the University of Southern California and her bachelor's degree ('85) from Tufts University. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine ('92) at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

In addition to her interest in college health, she has special clinical interests in internal medicine (including asthma, pulmonary conditions, migraine, diabetes, rheumatologic and autoimmune conditions, anxiety and depression), travel medicine (pre- and post-travel consultation), and eating disorders. She is also a member of the Eating Disorders Treatment Team at UHS.

Dr. Alper is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Howard Backer joined UHS in 2000 as a clinician in Urgent Care. He attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco ('75), followed by an internship at Highland, Alameda County Hospital, and an Emergency Medicine fellowship and residency at San Francisco General Hospital.  Many years later, he returned to UCSF for a residency in Preventive Medicine, including an MPH at UC Berkeley ('99).  Before transitioning to public health, Dr. Backer worked with The Permanente Medical Group in Hayward. He joined the California Department of Health Services in 2000, after practicing emergency medicine for 25 years in a variety of settings, including urban county hospitals, small resort communities, and community hospitals. 

Dr. Backer is certified by the American board of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Casey Batten joined UHS in 2006 and serves as head team physician. Prior to Cal, Casey was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedics at the University of California San Francisco. He also has provided medical coverage for NCAA championship events including men’s and women’s basketball, track and field, and FCS football.  In addition to his responsibilities with the student athletes at Cal, Dr. Batten continues as an invited speaker on various sports medicine topics on a local and national level, and also serves as a peer reviewer for two respected sports medicine publications. He has published on topics such as concussion, and physical activity factors in adolescent athletes. As a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), Dr. Batten is active in committee work dedicated to expanding the quality and availability of sports medicine training for medical students and resident physicians. Batten is also responsible for clinical and academic instruction for the UC Davis-UC Berkeley Sports Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Batten holds a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology-Exercise Science from the University of Wisconsin. After attending medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin, he completed a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine-Chattanooga Unit. Batten then earned a fellowship with the UC Davis -UC Berkeley Sports Medicine Program. Born and raised in Madison Wisconsin, Dr. Batten currently resides with his wife, Alison, in Berkeley.

Dr. Batten is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Brad Buchman joined UHS in 2008 as Medical Director. He is board certified in Family Medicine. Buchman received his medical degree (’89) from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, his MBA (’98) from California State University and his Associate Bachelor’s degree (’85) from UC Berkeley. He completed his residency in Family Medicine (’92) at UC San Diego Medical Center.

Buchman’s responsibilities include ensuring a high quality of care, supervising clinical operations and the occupational health program, and seeing patients in the Urgent Care, Primary Care, and Sports Medicine units. His primary focus at UHS is in two critical areas – quality of care and customer service. This includes expanding accessibility of services to faculty, staff and students; increasing visibility on campus; maintaining and building relationships with key campus partners and stakeholders, and continuing the community health model.

Dr. Buchman is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Cindy Chang has served as Head Team Physician for Cal's 27 athletic teams since 1995. She is board certified in Family Medicine and also holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. After earning both her bachelor's degree ('84) and medical ('89) degrees from Ohio State, Chang completed her Family Practice residency ('92) at University of California, Los Angeles before returning to Ohio State University for a fellowship in Sports Medicine. She was an elected four-year member of the Board of Directors for the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM), served on the Medical Education Committee for the American College of Sports Medicine and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the AMSSM Foundation.

Chang also is the author numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Aparna Dandekar joined UHS in 2008 as a physician in Urgent Care. After receiving both her bachelor’s of arts in Sanskrit as well as her bachelor’s of science in Zoology from the University of Washington, Seattle (‘96), she received her doctor of osteopathic medicine from the Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA (‘02), and did her residency in Family Medicine at the University of Southern California and the Los Angeles County Medical Center (‘05).

Dr. Dandekar has special clinical interest in Osteopathy, Ayurveda, and alternative medicine. She lives in the East Bay with her husband, Abhay, a pediatrician, and her daughter and son.  She loves traveling, camping, volunteering, and keeping up with her children’s many activities. She also enjoys reading ancient Sanskrit texts, as well as literature in the Indian languages of Marathi and Hindi.

Dr. Dandekar is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Ricky Dang joined UHS in 2011 as a physician in Primary Care. He is a doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, board-certified in Family Practice.

Dr. Dang is certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice.

Dr. Anna Harte (née Bloxham) joined UHS in 2001, and now serves as Associate Medical Director with clinical duties in both Primary Care and Urgent Care Clinics. She is board certified in Internal Medicine. She has a B.A. in music from University of California, Santa Cruz ('98) and received her medical degree from Yale University ('98), followed by a residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco ('01). In addition to her interest in college health, she has special interests in tuberculosis, HIV, and other infectious diseases as well as international health and care of the underserved. Harte also works at the City of Berkeley Tuberculosis and Communicable Disease Program and teaches with the UC Berkeley - UCSF Joint Medical Program. She still loves music, which she shares with her husband Alexis and children Mia and Leo.

Dr. Harte is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Elizabeth Hedelman joined UHS in 1995 and serves a Primary Care Physician in both Urgent Care Clinic and Primary Care Clinic. She is board certified in Family Practice. She received her medical degree from KU Medical Center at the University of Kansas and her bachelor's degree ('86) from University of California, Santa Barbara. She completed her residency in Family Practice ('95) at University of California, Davis. In addition to her interest in college health, she has a special clinical interest in eating disorders.

Hedelman is also a Healthnet Provider, an Asthma Protocol Committee member, a Migraine Protocol Committee chair, and a member of the Eating Disorder Treatment Team at UHS.

Dr. Hedelman is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Cynthia (Cindy) Johnson joined UHS in 2011 as a physician in Urgent and Primary Care. She attended the University of Washington, Seattle, where she received her PhD in Biochemistry (‘73) as well as her MD (‘76). Dr. Johnson comes to us with over thirty years of experience, mainly working in family practice in the Seattle area.

Dr. Johnson is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Annie Hope joined UHS in 2009 as a physician in Primary Care. She is a Board Certified Family Practice MD.  She received her Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Harvard University (86), then went on to receive her PHD from UCLA (94) and completed her Family Practice residency at Moses Cone (98). When Annie is not working you can find her hiking, reading or driving her children (all 5) to afterschool activities.

Dr. Hope is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Eleanore Kim joined UHS in 2009 and serves as a gynecologist. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (’93) and then received her medical degree from the University of Illinois (’98). She completed her residency in 2002 in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco.

She has a special interested in women’s health, family planning and contraception, cervical dysplasia and colposcopy. She was in a private practice in Berkeley for 7 years as an obstetrician/gynecologist and surgeon before coming to UHS. She is also involved with the Women’s Health/Dysplasia and Electronic Medical Records Committee at UHS. When Eleanore is not working she enjoys leisure time and travel with her husband and daughters Gabrielle and Millicent.

Dr. Kim is certified by the American Board of Gynecology.

Dr. Odile Leland-Arizmendi joined UHS in 2003 and serves as an Urgent Care physician. She received her Bachelor’s of Art from Harvard University and her MD from Columbia University.

She works in the Emergency Department for Kaiser, as well as at the Chinese hospital in San Francisco. During her training, she was lucky enough to spend some time within the French medical system in Paris. Odile is fluent in English, French and Spanish.

Dr. Leland-Arizmendi is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Cynthia Li joined UHS in 2011 as a physician in Primary and Urgent Care. She received her BA from the University of Texas, Austin, and her MD from the the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Before coming to UHS Dr. Li worked in San Francisco with SF General Hospital, Kaiser, and St. Anthony Free Medical Clinic. She has been a past advisor in HIV for Doctors Without Borders in Xiangfan, China, and speaks Mandarin and medical Spanish. Dr. Li has special clinical interest in nutrition/food as medicine, environmental health, public health, and complementary and alternative medicine.

Dr. Li is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Diane Liu joined UHS in 1997 and serves as an Occupational Medical and Public Health Specialist. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Stanford University (‘81), her doctorate from Oregon Health Science University (‘85) and then went on to receive her Master in Public Health from our own UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health (’90).

In addition to her interest in public health she is also interested in ergonomics, emergency and infectious disease preparedness, zoonotic infection and toxicology. She received two fellowships one in Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the other in ATSDR Toxicology. She has contributed to publications such as “Poisoning and Drug Overdose” and “Critical Care Toxicology” and is currently contributing to the UCB campus AED program.

Dr. Liu is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Occupation Medicine, and Preventative Medicine.

Dr. Rosemary Mann joined UHS in 2008 and serves as an Urgent Care physician. She received her Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Santa Clara and then went on to receive her MD from UC San Francisco.

She is board certified in Emergency Medicine and has practiced emergency medicine in the E.R at Kaiser Hayward and Kaiser Walnut Creek for 35 years before joining the staff at the Tang Center.

Dr. Mann is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Marshall is certified by the American Board of Urology.

Dr. Harris Masket joined UHS in 2004 and serves as Chief Physician in Urgent Care Clinic and Associate Team Physician in Sports Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine. Masket received his medical degree ('99) at the George Washington University School of Medicine and his bachelor's degree ('93) at University of California, Berkeley. Masket completed his residency in Internal Medicine ('02) at Alameda County Medical Center.

In addition to his interest in college health and Urgent Care, he has special clinical interests in sports medicine, wound care, and nutrition.

Dr. Masket is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Debra Nelson joined UHS in 1989 and serves as a Primary Care Physician in Primary Care Clinic and Urgent Care Clinic. She received her medical degree ('81) from University of California, Los Angeles and her bachelor's degree from Wellesley College. Nelson completed her residency in Internal Medicine ('84) at the University of California, Los Angeles San Fernando Valley Program.

Dr. Nelson is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Jeffrey Nelson serves both as a Primary Care Physician in the Primary Care and Urgent Care Clinics and as an Associate Team Physician. He has been with UHS since 1999. He is board certified in Family Practice with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. He received his medical degree ('90) at Dartmouth Medical School and his bachelor's degree ('86) at University of California, Berkeley. He then completed the Flight Surgery training program ('92) with the US Navy in Pensacola, Florida. Nelson completed his residency in Family Practice ('97) at University of California, Davis and a Fellowship in Sports Medicine ('99) in the University of California, Davis/University of California, Berkeley combined program.

Nelson is a member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). In addition, he serves as team physician for the Cal Men's Soccer and Basketball teams.

Dr. Nelson is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. William (Bill) Pereira joined UHS in 2009 in our Occupational Health Clinic. He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine (‘75), and his master’s degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley (‘95).

Dr. Pereira has special clinical interest in preventative medicine and wellness, and is the associate chair of the editorial board of the University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter.

Dr. Pereira is certified by the American Board of Preventative Medicine (Occupational Health).

Dr. Erika Schwilk joined UHS in 2011 as a physician in Occupational Health. She received her BA in Biology with environmental emphasis from Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA and her MD from Medical College of Wisconsin.  Dr. Schwilk completed training in internal medicine at UC Davis where she worked as a hospitalist, then did fellowship training in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at UC San Francisco and obtained her MPH in Environmental Health from UC Berkeley. 

Dr. Schwilk currently serves on the UC Berkeley School of Public Health Alumni Association Board of Directors, and, in addition to occupational health, has special clinical interest in public health, environmental health, toxicology, and infectious disease.

Dr. Schwilk is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventative Medicine.

Dr. Ann Tipton joined UHS in 2008 as a physician in Primary Care. She is board certified in adolescent medicine. Dr. Tipton received her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University (‘70), her medical degree from UC San Francisco (‘76), and her master’s degree in Public Health from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health ('82).

Dr. Tipton has special clinical interest in preventative care and minor sports injuries. In addition to working at UHS Dr. Tipton participates in clinical teaching at UCSF.

Dr. Tipton is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.  

In addition to college health, Dr. Wilbur has a special clinical interest in fitness and nutrition, mental health, eating disorders, dermatology, health promotion and health education.

Dr. Wilbur is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
