Services for Transgender Students
Contents:
| Introduction |
Staff at University Health Services
recognize that transgender students have some health concerns that
are the same as those of other Cal students. However, other issues
may be different and require a greater understanding of transgender
student experiences or require transgender-specific information
or programs. |
| Medical Services |
The primary care clinics provide general medical care, including
women's health care, for the prevention and treatment of illness
and injury. UHS clinicians can also refer clients to other providers
such as physician specialists and physical therapists. Students
considering hormonal treatment and reassignment surgery are generally
referred to specialists. In some instances, our clinicians may
be able to refill hormone prescriptions received from another
provider.
See Medical Appointments.

| Mental
Health Services |
UHS offers a wide range of mental health services and programs
to help students with personal, academic, career, health-related
issues and crisis concerns. If you would like to request a counselor
familiar with transgender issues, you do so by writing on the
form you fill out to schedule an appointment. This would be enough
to direct you to a counselor with more experience/knowledge with
transgender issues.
See Counseling Appointments.

| Health
Promotion Services |
Health Promotion addresses individual and social responsibility
for health, including relevant issues in cultural and lifestyle
diversity. LGBT-specific activities include outreach, workshops,
educational materials, and support to campus-wide initiatives.
See Health Promotion
for more information.

| Student
Health Insurance |
The University requires
all students to have major medical insurance, and UHS provides the
Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) to meet that requirement. SHIP
benefits include coverage for procedures or treatments to change
characteristics of the body to those of the opposite sex, according
to plan guidelines and necessity criteria. See Student
Health Insurance Plan for more information about SHIP coverage. |
